Letter/petition from Balcombe Langridge, on behalf of William Midwinter, a soldier in the Oxfordshire militia, convicted (along with William Avery, soldier, of the same regiment) at the Sussex Assizes in July 1795, for taking part in a riot at Newhaven, Sussex; and the taking of a vessel property of Messrs Catt and Barton, millers of Bishopstone Tide Mill, Newhaven, Sussex; and the removal of 157 sacks of flour from the vessel. There is a covering letter from Lord Eardley. Grounds for clemency: the greater proportion of the flour has since been recovered, the prisoners were simply attempting to lower the price of provisions, no violence was used and Midwinter has behaved well in gaol. Initial sentence: death. Folios 113-116. See also HO 47/18/22, folios 107-110 and HO 47/18/70, folios 294-295 for Avery.
