Report of Archibald MacDonald on 1 individual petition (Francis Newbery, late of the position of Sheriff of Sussex) on behalf of William Midwinter, a soldier of the Oxfordshire Militia, convicted (along with William Avery another soldier in the same regiment) at the Sussex Assizes in July 1795, for taking part in a riot at Newhaven, in Sussex, to prevent corn from being loaded and being armed 'with fitted bayonets without the cork' (the corn was later sold 'under price' and 'taken in liquor'. Newbery mentions other riots occurring at Brighthelmstone [Brighton] and Horsham, in Sussex, which appear to have been dealt with harshly, 'awful and impressive examples' were made. Initial sentence: death. (Avery was immediately respited 'from Proofs of an imbecility of mind amounting nearly to idiocy'). Recommendation: none given. Folios 107-110.
