Report of Soulden Lawrence on 1 collective petition (48 people, from Rochester) on behalf of Susannah Keys, cook to the prosecutor, convicted at the Kent Spring Assizes at Maidstone in March 1794, for stealing a number of china cups, plates, saucers, dishes etc. and other small items, value about £1:3:0, property of Robert Bristow, attorney-at-law, Rochester. Evidences supplied by the prisoner, Robert Bristow, Edward Wright, Elizabeth Simcock, John Beaumont, constable and Ann Saunders, inn keeper. There are two covering letters to the petition from Josiah Dornford. Grounds for clemency: age (19 years), previous good character, first offence, 'believed the Devil was in her' and the prisoner maintained her aged mother. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: none given. Folios 63-73.
