HO 47/18/12
1795 Apr
Report of Soulden Lawrence on 1 collective petition (15 people, members of the grand jury) on behalf of William Smith, convicted at the last assizes at New Sarum, in Wells, for a robbery. There is mention of a Reverend Rigby making a personal visit on the prisoner's behalf. The prisoner received harsh punishment from the military for being absent from his quarters the night of the robbery. Grounds for clemency: good behaviour in gaol, if he was executed he would become 'an object of pity' rather than an example to prospective felons. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: transportation for life. Folios 49-51. See also HO 47/18/7, folios 21-29.
