Report of J. Mingay on James Churchyard, convicted at the 'last' Norfolk Assizes at Thetford, for stealing 17 sheep, property of John Branch, farmer at Billingford in Norfolk, on 12/13 January 1795. There is a letter from Mingay, prior to the report, asking sentence to be suspended. Evidences supplied by John Branch, John Brighton, William Allden, shepherd; John Hunt, farmer at Yaxley, Suffolk; John Taylor, farmer, baker and constable of Hoxne, Suffolk; Mary Dines and Robert Algar. Grounds for clemency: behaved well during his time in gaol, good previous behaviour, feels contrition and the good social standing of those who have petitioned for him [petitions wanting]. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: mercy. Folios 41-48. See also HO 47/18/9, folios 35-36.
