Report of Alexander Thomson on 1 collective petition (27 people, mainly from Leicester, including the vicar, clerk, churchwardens and overseers of the poor of Thurmaston; also includes the prosecutor and 1 petitioner from Shoreditch in Middlesex) on behalf of John Bentley, of Thurmaston, convicted (with Thomas Kirk) at the Leicestershire Lent Assizes in 1792, for stealing butchers meat and other articles, property of John Walton and some woollen cloth and other articles, property of John Lockwood. Walton had the things on his cart when he was returning from Leicester Market to Queniborough when he stopped at a public house at Thurmaston to leave some things there. Grounds for clemency: first offence, previous good character, is penitent, has a dependent wife and 4 small children and committed the crime 'thro Intoxication of the Moment'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks against mercy (states if granted Kirk should also have the same sentence). Folios 262-265. See also HO 47/14/43, folios 209-212.
