Report of Henry Gould on 1 individual petition (Lord Petre) on behalf of Thomas Gibson, of Ingrave, convicted at the Essex Assizes, for stealing 2 cock turkeys and 8 hen turkeys, value 10/- property of Mark Gotts, on 29 June 1792. Evidences supplied by Hannah Gotts and Mark Gotts. The judge states that such crime is the main reason such food stuffs were rising in price. Furthermore the breaking of the lock on the stable belonging to the dwelling house 'at least approached the Nature of a Burglary', and prosecutor had lost 18 turkeys, roughly worth the same as 1 sheep 'the stealing of which is a Capital felony'. Grounds for clemency: first offence, has the support of many 'respectable neighbours' of Lord Petre, prisoner is in the prime of life, has a family (small children), and is 'much esteemed' by his masters and clergy of the parish all of whom are willing to give his a previous good character. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 256-261.
