Report of William Henry Ashhurst on 1 collective petition/reference (23 people, from Norwich including the mayor, aldermen, 2 sheriffs and the prosecutors) on behalf of John Algar, convicted at Norwich on 17 August 1791, for breaking into a counting house and stealing £3:11:01/2, property of Messers Dewing and Mack, on 11 August 1791. The judge considered that 'As the offence was committed in so large a mercantile City I thought it very necessary to pass the sentence mentioned in the petition'. There is a letter from James Bradley stating that the prisoner's behaviour on the Fortune hulk was good. Grounds for clemency: youth (19 years), previous good character, first offence, already served 12 months of his sentence and behaved well during confinement, was penitent, and for consideration of his 'very respectable and aged Parents'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy. Folios 242-247.
