Report of Nash Grose on 1 collective petition (35 people, from Stafford[? much of the petition is illegible]) on behalf of Ann Pugh alias Ann Sandford, servant to the prosecutor, convicted at the Staffordshire Spring Assizes in 1792, for stealing a cotton gown, a hat and various assorted wearing apparel, 31/2 guineas in gold and 9/- in silver, from the house of Edward Harrison of Wolverhampton, in January 1792. The prisoner stated at the trial that her mistress had been 'in liquor' and her master had sought 'connexion with her'; both statements rejected by the judge. The judge considers the crime 'atrocious' being committed in a 'great manufacturing town' and the prisoner having no supported defence. Grounds for clemency: youth (18 years), lived in many places as a servant, and previous good character. Initial sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: transportation remitted and the prisoner to spend her sentence in a house of correction. Folios 233-235.
