Report of Richard Perryn on 1 individual petition/letter (George Annesley) and 1 collective petition (3 people, prisoner's wife and parents) on behalf of Thomas Abley, of Bewdley in Worcestershire, peruke maker and hairdresser (both occupations given separately), convicted at 'last Gloucestershire Assizes, for stealing banknotes, value 20 guineas. Being a hairdresser he frequented 'public places of resort' and lodged at an inn in Cheltenham from where the notes were missed. He was pursued and the notes were found in the lining of his hat. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, first offence, behaved well during his trial and for the sake of his family; and Perryn had already indicated he would provide a favourable report if a petition was produced (having received several respectable applications for a reprieve). Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: 1 year in prison. Folios 223-227.
