Report of Nash Grose on Philip George, convicted at the 'last' Surrey Assizes, for highway robbery on Henry Meriton, and stealing a watch and money, on 29 July 1792. The robbery took place 'between Dockhead Bermondsey and a place called the Neckinger and the prisoner (with 'one Williams', not tried as the grand jury did not find the bill against him) were taken at Whitechapel in Middlesex. Evidences supplied by Henry Meriton and the prisoners. The judge considered the prisoner to be part of a gang and that such crimes were numerous. Grounds for clemency: none given. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 205-208. See also HO 47/14/44, folios 213-214.
