Report of William Henry Ashhurst on 1 individual petition (prisoner, counter signed by an ex-employer) and 1 collective petition (11 people, from Catton in Norfolk including vicar, churchwarden and past employers) on behalf of Richard Burgess, convicted (2 others who were tried with him were acquitted for lack of evidence) at the Norfolk Assizes at Thetford, for stealing a sheep, property of William Crisp, at Catton. There is a covering letter in the prisoners favour from H. Hobart MP. Grounds for clemency: youth (age not given), first offence, previous good character and has a dependent family. Initial Sentence: death, commuted to 7 years transportation. Recommendation: 2 years hard labour in the Wymondham House of Correction. Folios 168-173. See also HO 47/14/29, folios 161-162.
