Report of John Wilson on 1 individual petition (Susanna White, prisoner's wife) and 4 collective petitions (the prisoners; 2 from 2 people, the wives of the convicts, and 4 people, trades-people from Burrough and Southwark in Surrey) on behalf of John White and John Tufnell, coal porters, convicted at the Kent Summer Assizes at Maidstone on 16/17 July 1791, for stealing a pig, property of William Phillips, victualler from Legreen[?]. The judge considered them to be part of a criminal gang. Evidence supplied by Richard ------. Grounds for clemency: both prisoners have poor wives and 5 children between them (White's wife being of 'Distracted Mind', and both families now destitute, both men were from reputable families, previous good characters, was duped by another (Jos Salmon), the prosecution was 'Spiteful', and it was previously believed that mercy had been extended. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 119-128.
