Report of Beaumont Hotham on 2 individual petitions (Earl of Darlington and Lord Hawkes) on behalf of Richard Shepherdson, tried at the Lincolnshire Summer Assizes in June 1789, for pick pocketing (a pocket book). Acquitted of stealing privately from the person and convicted of larceny only. Grounds for clemency: good behaviour during imprisonment, application made by 'many Gentlemen', no circumstances of aggravation, from a good family (father is a gamekeeper to Lord Hawkes), has already served 21/2 years and behaved well during his time of the hulks. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: free pardon. Folios 36-41.
