Whilst legislation and major policy developments relating to road traffic are usually initiated by the Department of Transport, the Home Office has an administrative role in this area by virtue of the responsibility of the police for the practical application of traffic legislation. This role commonly involves a process of consultation with the Department of Transport, regional police forces, local authorities and other bodies, and the co-ordination of activity by these different organisations towards a given end. Specific functions include the administration of the Central Conference of Chief Constables Traffic Committee, and the Association of Chief Police Officers Traffic Committee. The files reflect these concerns of the Home Office in the field of road traffic control.
