Description

Governor Mathew's accommodation; has ordered a new and substantial stone barrack to be built, where the old one stands; discusses labour which is supplied by the soldiers of the 60th Regiment and the 'Carolina Negroes' [Black Corps] - in which are included Artificers - at one Bit per day and Rum, the expense calculated at 6d Sterling per man, and states that the common hire of a 'Field Negroe' [enslaved person] is four Bitts [sic] per day; establishment of the Artillery and Ordnance Stores - the barrack assisted by 'near one hundred of the Carolina Negroes, from the Artificers and Pioneer Corps.'
