"The Anatomy of the Aeroplane."
"A bird has legs to alight on. The aeroplane has its legs too which are called the undercarriage. If the wheels remain in the position shown here when the machine is flying they would present a great deal of resistance to the air and slow up the speed accordingly. For this reason most modern aircraft tuck up their wheels after taking off; they are said to retract them. In this view of the latest Spitfire the cavities into which the wheels fit are clearly shown." M.4209.K/C
