"The Anatomy of the Aeroplane."
"This picture shows the tail unit of a Halifax bomber being placed in position. The large lowered surfaces are called elevators and the position they are now in would cause the aircraft to dive if in the air. If they are raised to a corresponding position above, the machine would climb. At either end of these planes are the fins and rudders. The triangular fins (bearing the R.A.F. markings) remain rigid while the back parts, called the rudders, turn left and right to steer the aircraft when flying. In practice, turning is the combined use of the ailerons seen in the last picture which tip the wings up and down and these large rudders."
