"The Anatomy of the Aeroplane."
"The aeroplane is kept in the air by its wings. To-day the wings are reduced to as stromg and simple a structure as possible, which is well shown in the 99 ft. span of the Short Stirling bomber. The nearest hinged surface in the foreground is the aileron and this is moved up or down by the control column according to whether the pilot wishes to bank left or right. Next to the aileron is one of the hinged flaps which are lowered to act as an air brake when the aircraft is landing."
