Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick to Holdernesse: Soubise has abandoned Cassel and will probably quit all of Hesse. The king's troops can therefore now go into winter quarters in states allied to France. For the next campaign there should be two armies, one to cover Hesse and Hanover, and the other to operate on the Rhine. As the French will put 130,000 men into the field, the king's army must be increased. The present army is capable only of holding the enemy on the Rhine, so another must be found. France will negate the victories in America if she takes the upper hand in Europe. Dated at Münster. ff. 143, 144
