Holdernesse to Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick, congratulating him on the successful start to his campaign. Cressener's eviction was at the instigation of the imperial court, as was the seizure of Frankfurt and the projected capture of Mainz, Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein. They also had designs on Mannheim, but it was garrisoned by the elector Palatine. Belle-Isle's health is failing and he is contemplating retirement [as war minister]. Speculation as to his successor. Dated at Whitehall. ff. 44-46
