Description

Files from the CRI (Criminal) and CCS (Criminal Cases) symbol series relating to the functions and responsibilities of the Home Office with regard to the preparation of legislation and the administration of the law, as well as the overall management of the criminal justice system. Much of the work involves liaison with the Lord Chancellor's Department and the series includes files on the provision of legal aid in criminal cases transferred by the Lord Chancellor's Department which became responsible for all legal aid from c.1981. They include papers of the Working Party on Legal Aid in Criminal Cases, 1960-1963 and the Departmental Committee on Legal Aid in Criminal Proceedings, set up in 1964 following the working party's report.

Arrangement
Arrangement

The papers in this series are arranged by departmental file number. The inclusion of a date before or after a file number (as in CRI (1960)2/12/1 or 70/2/11(60)) indicates the year in which the file is supposed to have been created, but often it only indicates the year in which the first subfile was raised on a particular subject.

Separated material

Included amongst the papers of the committees are some Long Papers which were given local registration numbers but which were linked to CRI files. These papers have been listed in full under the reference of the CRI file to which they were annexed. They are in
