Copy of letter reporting with great concern that Tobago is now in possession of the French; description of events; three enclosures: the Article of Capitulation [in French] signed on 2 June 1781 by Le Comte de Gaasse, Le Marquis De Boullié, George Ferguson [who signed on 5 June], H. J. R. Stanhope [Major of the 86 Regiment]; correspondence from Francis S. Drake [Rear Admiral ?]; document to Ferguson urging (for reasons verbally given to them by Ferguson) capitulation on the same terms granted this war to Dominica signed by J. Leith, Thomas Fairholme, Joseph Robley, Thomas Wilson, R/K? T. Mackenzie, Peter Francklyn, Stewart Macvey, Thomas Collow, C. Irvine, George Forbes, Thomas Currie, John Campbell, John Campbell, William Bruce, Charles Wightman, Alexander Campbell, John Balfour, John Hamilton, Robert Lyon; recommendation for Ferguson to sign capitulation after examining it, signed by Walter Robertson, ? Graham, Gilbert Petrie; Return of Staff and Regimental Officers, Non Commissioned Officers, Drummers & Privates of His Majestys 86th Regiment, Royal and Island Artillery Battalion of Militia and Seamen Encamped on Concordia Estate in the Island of Tobago 30th May 1781, signed by John Phipps, Brigade Major; copies of correspondence between French General Philibert François Rouxel de Blanchelande [who became Governor of Tobago] and Ferguson during the siege; correspondence between Blanchelande and Ferguson; includes Ferguson informing Blanchelande of acts of cruelty and violence as detachment of French troops 'cut to pieces' a 'Negro Watchman' and burnt Sugar Works belonging to Mr. Collon [?], Ferguson believes Blanchelande did not authorise these acts and Blanchelande replies that he did not authorise; also discussion of 'punishment' of English 'Negro' slaves; letter to Ferguson gives warmest acknowledgement of his bravery to defend the island for nine days against a powerful army, signed by 36 people including Thomas Cotton, Gilbert Petrie, George Forbes, Thomas Collow, and Alexander Campbell.
