Nature of request
The petitioners state that in the King's twenty-first year [20 November 1292-19 November 1293], when the King had ordered the people of Sandwich to equip a ship to guard the sea and protect merchants against the King's enemies, this ship encountered their ship, returning from Calais to London, attacked it, and took money and merchandise from them. They have sued before the mayor and burgesses of Sandwich for compensation for their losses and their damages, but with no effect. They ask the King and council to order that compensation for these losses and damages be given them.
Nature of endorsement
A writ of the King's Chancery is to be issues to Robert de Burghesse, Constable of Dover and Warden of the Cinque Ports, that, when he has, with all diligence, inquired into the truth of the contents of this petition, by the oath of good and law-worthy men of Sandwich and other foreign places, both inside liberties and outside, and when he has called those who should be called, and heard their arguments, he is to do justice, so that the King hears no more of this. And on this matter the sheriff of Kent is to be ordered to summon as many and such men, and where and when, as the said Warden will instruct him etc. by whom etc.
