Nature of request
The Mayor, Aldermen and community of London state that as a result of a statute made recently at York, foreigners buy and sell their merchandise in London at retail, contrary to their franchises. They ask that they might have and enjoy the franchises they have had from time immemorial, as the Great Charter requires.
Nature of endorsement
Because the Great Charter wishes the city of London to have all its franchises and free customs free and unimpaired, and the intention of our lord the King and of the prelates, earls and barons in each parliament has been and still is that the Great Charter should be upheld in all points, our said lord the King wills that his said citizens should have all their franchises and their free customs in their entirety, as they have had hitherto, notwithstanding the statute etc.
