Description

Common people of London.

King and council.
Nature of request
The common people of London make four complaints:1) They state that although it was ordained by the King and council that the Sheriffs' clerks were to be removable every year, they are remaining in office, causing great maintenance in pleas before the Sheriffs and the Mayor.2) They state that although it was ordained that none of the King's bailiffs or ministers was to be a victualler, this too has been ignored, leading to forestalling of victuals and to high prices.3) They complain about taxes that are being imposed without warrant from the King, and against law and reason.4) They complain about usurers, who are not being punished. They request a remedy for all these things.
Nature of endorsement
Those who have been harmed are to come to Chancery and show in specific detail what they have shown in general terms: and a remedy is to be given to them there.
