Reference
SC 8/120/5965
Date
[c. 1310-c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Men of Lancaster.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Lancaster request a grant of pontage for six years to pay for the rebuilding of the bridge over the River Lune at Lancaster, destroyed by the Scots.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the Council that this should be granted in relief of the town, if it pleases the king. And thus Coram RegeFor the burgesses of the town of Lancaster for the bridge of Lancaster.
Places mentioned
Lancaster, [Lancashire]
River Lune, [Lancashire].
Note
Dated on the dorse to? 1310, with reference to a grant of pontage (CPR 1307-13, p.236). However, that grant appears to be unconnected, being for entirely different bridges and in response to a separate petition (see SC 8/93/4648-9). The mention of the Scots would seem to date this petition to the aftermath of a Scottish raid, possibly 1316 but more probably that of 1322, when Lancaster was sacked.
