Reference
SC 8/120/5952
Date
[? c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Kingston upon Hull.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The burgesses request that they be discharged of certain levies charged upon them, and that the lands of York and Beverley be asked to assist them in contributing to future levies. They state that they have suffered greatly from the seizure of their ships for use in the king's navy, and are impoverished by the costs of defence, both against the rivers and against the Scots. For this reason, many burgesses have left, to the greater impoverishment of the town.1)
Nature of endorsement
The response is given elsewhere in this bundle.2) Coram magnatibus.
Places mentioned
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
River Humber, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
River Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
York
Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
Note
Dated on the guard to? c 1377, with reference to CPR 1374-7, p.428. Frost, Hull, p.134 suggests that the petition referred to there was prompted by new charges on Beverley themselves prompted by the present petition. This would seem to be a plausible chronology.
