Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/119/5949
Date
[c. 1362]
Description
Petitioners
Peter de Knotteshale (Knettishall) and John de Stoke.
Name(s)
de Knotteshale (Knettishall); de Stoke, Peter; John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners request that they not be impeached regarding ancient debts held against John de Middleton, former victualler of Calais. They state that they had bailed Eccleshale to appear before the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to render account for Middelton as victualler, and to answer for all other debts and arrears. The Treasurer had been unable to proceed [due to Eccleshale's death], and Middelton's executors distributed his goods and chattels according to his will.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege et Magno Consilio.
Places mentioned
Calais, [France].
People mentioned
Richard de Eccleshale, [Treasurer of Calais]
John de Middelton, former victualler of Calais
[Simon Islip], Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
Middelton appears to have served as Victualler of Calais during the 1350s, while Eccleshale was Treasurer of Calais around the same time, and was dead by 6 January 1362 (CPR 1361-4, p.152). A roll of Eccleshale as controller of Middelton for 33-35 Edward III (1359-61) is at E 101/174/8, and given that this appears to be from the end of both men's periods of office, the petition probably dates from soon afterwards.
