Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Caerleon (Llantarnam).
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Abbot and Convent of Caerleon make three requests.1) They ask for the return of land which they had been forced through fear to grant to Llewelyn Bren, but who was now unable to hold land due to his felony.2) They request that they be granted the ransom of their people in the mountains, who are now put to ransom due to the war, since these people did not agree to the war.3) They ask that the king order John Giffard, Keeper of the lands of Glamorgan and Morgannog, deliver to them the 10 marks granted to them per year.1)
Nature of endorsement
It shall be ordered to the said John that he inform himself concerning the lands so let and the letting, and other article etc., and inform the king.2) This could not be done because it is certified before the king that they were of the war against the king.3) If it can be established that it was paid then order that it should be paid.
Places mentioned
Caerleon, [Monmouthshire, Wales]
Glamorgan and Morgannog lordship, [Wales].
People mentioned
Llewelyn Bren
John Giffard, keeper of Glamorgan and Morgannog.
Note
Dated by Rees to 1316-17. Giffard was appointed as keeper of Glamorgan on 20 April 1316, in the aftermath of the rebellion of Llewelyn Bren (1314-16). The petition was presumably made shortly afterwards.
