Reference
SC 8/119/5947
Date
[c. 1314-c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
People of the Seven Hundreds of the Weald in Kent.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of the seven hundreds request remedy against the bailiff, William de Orlaston, who they claim has made excessive demands of them, beyond the law and contrary to the decisions of the justices of the last eyre.
Nature of endorsement
Have a writ in Chancery and let it be ordered to the said bailiff that he should not distrain the tenants to make the presentations in this way unless they are accustomed to be held in such parts.
Places mentioned
Kent.
People mentioned
William de Orlaston (Orlandstone, Orlestone), bailiff.
Note
A William de Orlaston served as sheriff of Kent 1327-8, suggesting he served as bailiff at an earlier date. This would seem to correlate with the handwriting, thus suggesting that the reference to the 'last eyre' probably relates to that held in 1313-14 (Crook, Records of the General Eyre).
