Description
Petitioners
William de Kellawe (Kelloe) of Thornley.
Name(s)
de Kellawe (Kelloe), William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Kellawe states that, with the assent of the bishopric of Durham, he took £70 of William de Hebburn held at Durham to pay to Robert de Bruce for their safety. However, Hebburn has prosecuted him for recovery of the money and damages during the last vacancy, for which he is in prison. Since the money was taken for the common good, he asks that the money be raised from the community, so that he can be released, and that he be bailed until this is done.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be sent to the Bishop that he should call before him the men of the region which was saved through the payment of this money, and William de Kellawe, and if it found that William took the money with common consent of the people for their salvation, as supposed in this petition, then justice should be done to William immediately, as the case should not have come to the King.
