Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/119/5924
Date
[1377-1399]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Kingston upon Hull.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Hull request the confirmation of their charters and privileges with various additional clauses. They claim that their town is extremely impoverished by lost trade and continual taxes and payments, and that these additional rights are necessary for their salvation. They also request the extension of a writ of Edward III in 1353, exempting them from various charges on account of their poverty following the plague.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
River Humber
Yorkshire
Westminster.
People mentioned
Edward [III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1381-2, with reference to CChR 1341-1417, pp.277-8, a confirmation of the charters of Hull with various additional clauses. However, the additions given there are entirely different to those appearing here, and the two appear unrelated. The reference to Edward III as the king's grandfather clearly dates it to the reign of either Richard II of Henry IV, while the handwriting would suggest the early years of that reign.
