Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/119/5908B
Date
[1315-1316]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Carmarthen.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Carmarthen request action in their dispute over the sale of goods in Old Carmarthen. They state that Edward I granted that only certain goods could be bought and sold in gross within five leagues of their borough. However, as appears by the attached transcript, the Prior of Carmarthen has been holding markets in Old Carmarthen, and although the Justice of South Wales had been ordered by various writs to enforce this grant, he has failed to do so, to the great damage of the king and the town.
Nature of endorsement
Because it was ordered that the sale of merchandise in gross, except those exempted, was not permitted within five leagues of the king's boroughs in Wales except within those boroughs, the justice is commanded, despite the protest of the Prior of Carmarthen, that he should not permit the sale of goods in Old Carmarthen unless the Prior produce a charter of the king or his predecessors, or other such evidence, allowing him to hold such a market.
Places mentioned
Carmarthen, [Carmarthenshire], Wales
[Old] Carmarthen, [Carmarthenshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England
[Robert Daviston], Prior of Carmarthen
[William Martyn], Justice of South Wales.
Note
Dated to 1315-16, since it clearly post-dates the writ at SC 8/119/5908A, a copy of which is included in the transcript once attached to this petition, now at SC 8/119/5910. The petition presumably pre-dates the resolution of this dispute in favour of the Prior on 8 October 1316 (CCR 1313-18, p.370).
