Reference
SC 8/119/5904
Date
[c. 1337-c. 1338]
Description
Petitioners
Iseude (Isolde, Isolda) Inge, widow of William Inge.
Name(s)
Inge, Iseude (Isolde, Isolda)
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
[The right side of this petition is faded and illegible]Inge requests remedy in her case against the Earl of Norfolk over her free tenement in Edworth. An assize was held before the justices into this matter, but she complains that the original jury had been changed by force.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ be sent to the sheriff according to the effect of this petition, and if the panel was removed and others taken against the wishes of the ministers as supposed in this petition, they should be removed and others summoned who are good and suitable according to the law. Nevertheless, if the lady wishes to sue a writ before the king to hold an oyer et terminer before the justices assigned to this as contained in the petition and of the contempt made against the king and to his damage, then let her do so.
Places mentioned
Edworth, Bedfordshire
Bedford, [Bedfordshire].
People mentioned
William Inge, former husband of the petitioner
Thomas [of Brotherton], Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England
John de Shardelowe, justice of assize
Robert Bustler
Roger le Goys
Robert de Gemyworth.
Note
Dated on the guard to? 1335-43, with reference to JUST 1/30, the record of Shardelowe's assize in Bedfordshire in 9-17 Edward III. Orders to Shardelowe and his fellow, Robert de Croft, to continue with an assize of novel disseisin brought by Isolde against Thomas of Brotherton were issued on 9 December 1337 and 16 January 1338 (CCR 1337-9, p.232, p.281), and this would appear to be the same case. Since Thomas of Brotherton is not referred to as the 'late' earl, the petition probably dates to before his death in 1338.
