Reference
SC 8/118/5895
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Poor burgesses of Ilchester.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
[A large part of this petition is stained and illegible]1) The burgesses request remedy in their dispute over the site of the Somerset county court. They state that the court was moved from Ilchester to Somerton by the steward of Queen Eleanor, to the ruin of them and the king's farm. The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer were commanded to view an inquest taken into the matter, but they did nothing, and although a petition was presented at the Westminster Parliament of 14 Edward II, and a further writ issued, nothing has yet been done.2) Copy of a writ of Edward II to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, ordering them to view and examine the inquisition returned before them, and to do what is right for the king and the county community.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] For the King and the burgesses of Ilchester[on dorse] Let the writ be taken before the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, that they should view and examine the inquest held before them, and if there is a reason why they have not done this, let the cause be certified before the King in chancery.
Places mentioned
Ilchester, [Somerset]
Somerton, [Devon]
York
Westminster.
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
Eleanor [of Castile], Queen of England
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
This petition clearly relates to the same issue as SC 8/2/77, and the petition mentioned as being presented at Westminster in the fourteenth year is that petition. This later petition was evidently presented to Edward III, presumably early in his reign, and contains another copy of the writ also copied onto SC 8/2/77.
