Description
Petitioners
People of the Channel Islands.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of the Channel Islands make three separate complaints against the ministers of Otho de Grandison.1) They complain about exactions made by the ministers, who have taken fines contrary to judgements of the court, and ask that the ministers' actions be judged in the king's court, according to English law.2) They ask that fish landed in Guernsey be taken from port to certain places at least three times a week, so that the people might buy the fish for their own use and profit, to prevent them being sold on at high prices or bought by foreign merchants. The ministers have allowed this to happen.3) They ask that no man be allowed to be ousted from his free tenement without judgement or inquiry. The ministers have done this, not fearing punishment due to the remoteness and poverty of the islands, and they request that justices look into this complaint.
