Reference
SC 8/118/5879
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Jedburgh.
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Abbot of Jedburgh
Nature of request
[The face of this petition is badly faded.]The Abbot requests remedy regarding the church of Abbotsley, of which he is the rightful patron. The church was taken into the hands of the king due to the war, but has not been returned, despite the peace treaty and an earlier petition.
Nature of endorsement
Let men be assigned to enquire into the matters contained in this petition, and when the inquest is returned into the Chancery, let it be put before the justices and order them to hear the complaints of the parties and call the serjeants of the king, and having heard the reasons they should do justice.
Places mentioned
Jedburgh, [Roxburghshire], Scotland
Abbotsley, Huntingdonshire.
People mentioned
Robert de Bruys (Bruce).
Note
The petition mentioned within the document, presented at the Salisbury parliament of 1328, is clearly SC 8/16/756. Arthuret church, also mentioned in that petition, was restored in 1330, but Abbotsley is not mentioned (CPR 1327-30 p.496). This petition presumably dates from around this time, after the Treaty of Northampton (1328), but before 1333, by when Jedburgh's possessions were again forfeited (CPR 1330-4, p.457).
