Date
[c. 1295-c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Mathew Loreor, clerk.
Name(s)
Loreor, Mathew
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Loreor requests that the king send a letter to the Bishop of Coutances, asking him not to trouble him further concerning the church of St Clement on Jersey until either peace exists between the king and the king of France, or until the matter may be dealt with by the king and council. He states that he received the church after it came into the king's hands on account of the war, but the Bishop has ordered Matthew to render the church, its issues and fruits to him.
Nature of endorsement
Before the Council.Write to the Bishop that he leave him in peace and does not trouble him for the fruits as he has been placed there for defence, since the King of France has done this in similar cases.
Places mentioned
Normandy, [France]
Coutances, [Normandy France].
People mentioned
Bishop of Coutances.
Note
Appears to have been presented with the earlier writ at SC 8/118/5874A, which was presumably used as evidence of Loreor's claim. A number of similar grants of churches in the Channel Islands were made following their seizure from French monasteries during this period. The petition clearly post-dates the writ, but since there are no references to actions by 'the former king', it appears to pre-date the death of Edward I. The period 1295-1300 appears most likely, although such issues continued into the fourteenth century.
