Nature of request

Murton, [Westmorland]
Hartley, [Westmorland].
People mentioned
[Thomas Arundel], Archbishop of Canterbury, Chancellor of England
Thomas Musgrave
Richard [Musgrave], son of Thomas Musgrave
John de Helton of Burton.
Note
Given the Musgrave pedigree, the attack must have taken place on 26 July 1408 (Thursday after St James, 9 [Henry IV]), and since Helton complains that he had been away from his lands for 'three quarters of a year', the petition presumably dates to 1409, intended for presentation at the next parliament. Originally summoned for 26 October 1409, this eventually opened in January 1410, by which point Arundel had been dismissed as chancellor (21 December 1409). The Complete Peerage, vol. IX, p.437 states that Thomas Musgrave died 'in or soon after 1407', but he was clearly still alive in July 1408, and there is nothing here to suggest that he had died by the time of the petition.
