Reference
SC 8/117/5813
Date
[c. 1372-c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Bolenger (Berengar) Nathas, Prior of St Faith, Horsham.
Name(s)
Nathas, Bolenger (Berengar)
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Prior of St Faith, Horsham
Nature of request
The prior requests resolution of a dispute over the priory's tenure of the church of St Margaret Moses, Friday Street, London. He claims that the parson, Geoffrey, appointed by the king when the property was in his hands due to the war, had claimed it to be a parsonage when it was actually a vicarage, as found in the registers of the Bishop of London, held of St Faith's for 5 marks per year. This payment is now in arrears by more than 25 years.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Horsham, [Norfolk]

Friday Street, London
London.
People mentioned
Geoffrey [Spenser], parson of St Margaret Moses, Friday Street
Bishop of London.
Note
Geoffrey Spenser was presented to St Margaret Moses, Friday Street on 14 December 1348 (CPR 1348-50, p.218). If the 'false suggestion' to the king occurred soon afterwards, and since the prior claims that the rent was over 25 years in arrears, this would date the petition to around 1373 or shortly thereafter, although, since no former king is mentioned, presumably to Edward III's reign. Berengar Nathas was elected prior of Horsham in 1356, and appears to have held the post until 1389 (VCH Norfolk).
