[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Christian de Hornedecherche (Hornchurch), warden of Hornchurch.
Name(s)
de Hornedecherche (Hornchurch), Christian
Addressees
King.
Occupation
warden of Hornchurch
Nature of request
1) The warden of Hornchurch asks that the king enquire into why, on the death of the previous master, the king's officials entered the property of the house and took it into the king's hands. He claims that this was against the original grant of Henry II, and asks that the king order the officials not to do so in future. He also re-states that the house is exempt from lay taxation.2) Christian de Hornedecherche, warden of Hornchurch, claims that after the death of his predecessor, the king's ministers entered the church's property and took it into the king's hands, against their privileges. He repeats the request that royal officials be ordered not to enter the property in future, and that the house is free from lay taxation.
Nature of endorsement
Let the bailiff of Havering be ordered to appear before the king's council and show by what authority he took the church into the king's hands.
Places mentioned
Hornchurch, [Essex]
Montjoux, [Savoy, France]
Havering-atte-Bower, [Essex].
People mentioned
Henry [II], King of England
Bailiff of Havering
Adam de Osegodeby (Osgodby), [keeper of Hornchurch].
Note
Adam de Osgodeby was appointed as keeper on 4 June 1315 (CPR 1313-17, p.297), and the petition probably dates from soon after this appointment. The first petition appears to be a copy of an earlier complaint, upon which the second petition was based after the initial remedy seemingly failed. Since only the second petitioner is identified by name, it is unclear whether both are from the same individual, or refer to the same events.
