Description
Petitioners
Maud de Holland, former wife of Robert de Holland.
Name(s)
de Holland, Maud
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Maud de Holland asks that the king recover lands formerly in his hands due to the capture and imprisonment of her husband, so that she can recover her own rights in these lands. On her husband's capture, the lands (of which she was jointly enfeoffed) were taken into the king's hands, but were then occupied by force by others. She also asks for the restitution of land in Lancashire and Derbyshire, now in the hands of the Earl of Lancaster, which are the inheritance of her son.
Nature of endorsement
[Partially obscured by repair]She should show her charters in Chancery, and let a search into this matter be made in Chancery and elsewhere to see how the lands came to the king, and if it is found that they came him by a reason other than that given by her, and if those who now hold the lands entered into them without livery, then they should be taken back into the king's hands, and right be done to her.

Note
Dated on the guard to 1328 on the basis of CFR 1327-37, p.117, a grant to Maud of the marriage of her son. This is not directly connected with the petition, but probably dates to that same period. Her husband, a prominent follower of Thomas of Lancaster who later deserted, was murdered on 15 October 1328.
