Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/116/5797
Date
[c. 1360-c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of Richard Hertle.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The executors ask for remedy in their action in the Exchequer to recover a debt owed to Hertle by Rose for shoeing horses. Despite petitioning parliament, and the Exchequer being ordered to make a judgement, the Treasurer and Barons had failed to come to judgement, to the damage of the executors.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Newgate prison, London.
People mentioned
Richard Hertle, Marshal of Newgate Prison
Edmund Rose, former keeper of horses.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1360 or thereafter. However, Rose seems to have served as keeper of horses for many more years, with accounts for his duties surviving until at least 1368 (E 101/105/38) and probably 1370 (E 101/314/30, for a journey to Flanders and France), and he is probably the man petitioning for his expenses as custodian of Jersey Castle in 1373 (SC 8/269/13401; CChR 1341-1417, p.228). It is unclear whether Rose was still alive at the time of the petition, but as he is said to have been the former keeper for the present king, the petition presumably dates to before Edward III's death.
