Date
[1376-1377]
Description

Name(s)
de Hampsterley (Hamsterley), William
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
Hampsterley requests that the council summon Thomas Staunton before them and demand that he allow him and his wife Elizabeth to take possession of her inheritance. While Hampsterley was in London proving that Elizabeth had come of age and securing a writ to the sheriff to allow them to have livery of the lands of Geoffrey de Staunton, Thomas and his men had forcibly seized the lands while they were still in the king's hands and thus prevented them taking possession.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Nottinghamshire.
People mentioned
Geoffrey de Staunton
Elizabeth Staunton, cousin and heir of Geoffrey de Staunton, wife of the petitioner
[John de Bekyngham (Beckingham)], Escheator of Nottinghamshire
Thomas Staunton.
Note
The writ to the escheator to deliver seisin of Staunton's lands was issued on 22 December 1375, while the form of the petition would suggest that it was presented soon afterwards, before the death of Edward III.
