Reference
SC 8/116/5792
Date
[1319-1320]
Description
Petitioners
Stephen de Howden, son of Stephen de Howden.
Name(s)
de Howden, Stephen
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Stephen de Howden requests that the king ensure that the pardon recently granted to Daunay should have no prejudice upon the £30 damages he had earlier secured against Daunay for various trespasses committed against him.
Nature of endorsement
It appears to the council that such letters of pardon are prejudicial to those unable to make recovery against transgressors who do not have lands and tenements, and they advise that if the king wishes to make such grants, then they should not be applied to those who the courts have imprisoned until satisfaction has been made.
Places mentioned
Hoveden (Howden), [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Stephen de Howden, father of the petitioner
Henry le Scrope, justice
Matthew Daunay (Dauney).
Note
A pardon was granted to Matthew Dauney for these offences on 11 May 1319 (CPR 1317-21, p.329). Presumably the petition was presented soon afterwards, either towards the end of the York parliament of 1319 (during which the pardon was granted), or the subsequent York parliament of January 1320.
