SC 8/116/5790
Date
[c. 1272-c. 1290]
Description
Petitioners
Men of Halcetor.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The men of Halcetor ask for an inquisition into their rights in common pasture. They stats that, in the time of Henry III, the king's bailiff, Godescallus, made allotment of the lands of the region, including the common pasture, but that the present bailiff, Knovill, has deprived them of this, so that they can no longer sustain their cattle or homes.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Hallecete (Halcetor), [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Honour of Montgomery, [Wales]
Montgomery, [Montgomeryshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Henry [III], King of England
Godescallus [de Malines], bailiff of Montgomery
Bogo de Cnouvyl (Knovill), bailiff of Montgomery.
Note
Dated by Rees to 'before 16 July 1290', on the basis of a commission of oyer et terminer into this issue and others ordered on that day. However, this was headed by Knovill himself, and thus whether that commission was related to the petition is unclear. The frequent references to Henry III may suggest an earlier date in Edward I's reign.
