Reference
SC 8/116/5788
Date
[1283-1290]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Hamme.
Name(s)
de Hamme, Robert
Nature of request
Robert de Hamme states that he and his brother had purchased the wardship and marriage of the heirs of John Torel for 170 marks. John has now died, and Robert has found the lands to be wasted. He therefore asks that he be allowed to pay the 170 marks at 10 marks per year.
Nature of endorsement
Take the goods of the priest into the King's hands.
Places mentioned
Stifford, [Essex]
Essex.
People mentioned
John de Hamme, parson of Stifford, brother of the petitioner
John Torel
John de Kirkby.
Note
Torel died in the latter part of 1282, and wardship was granted to the brothers on 4 February 1283. The petition clearly dates from some time after then, as John de Hamme had died in the intervening period. The mention of John de Kirkby must be in his capacity as either Keeper of the Rolls of Chancery (1263-84) or more probably Chancellor (1284-90); he died in March 1290.
