SC 8/116/5767
Date
[1331-1365]
Description
Petitioners
People of Hartlepool.
Addressees
[King] and Council.
Nature of request
The people of Hartlepool request an extension of their rights and privileges. They claim that grants made by King John and Henry III allow them the same rights and freedoms as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and since the people of Newcastle enjoy freedoms from various tolls and levies, they now seek to be granted the same rights in consideration of the troubles suffered by them in the wars of the king and his ancestors.
Nature of endorsement
Let their charters be viewed in Chancery, and if they contain nothing prejudicial to the king they should be confirmed for a reasonable fine, and also let the charters of Newcastle upon Tyne be viewed, and if it is found that the charters of Hartlepool are as claimed in the petition, they should be allowed the freedoms contained in the Newcastle charters for a reasonable fine.
Places mentioned
Hartlepool, [County Durham]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Cinque Ports.
People mentioned
John, King of England
Henry [III], King of England.
Note
Dated in Fraser, Northern Petitions to the period between 1331 and 1365. A charter of Henry III was confirmed in 1365, but not necessarily in response to this petition. A grant of murage for three years was made in 1331.
