Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/115/5748
Date
[c. 1353-c. 1357]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of St Saviour, Holland Bridge (Bridge End).
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Prior of St Saviour, Holland Bridge (Bridge End)
Nature of request
The prior requests grants in order to pay for the upkeep of the bridge at Holland Bridge. His lands are insufficient to meet the 100s per year cost, and he therefore requests a grant of pontage, and fairs to be held at the feast of St Mary Magdalene and the feast of St Philip and St James.
Nature of endorsement
He shall have pontage for five years on account of his poverty, [...].
Places mentioned
Holland Bridge (Bridge End), [Lincolnshire].
Note
A fair, to be held at the feast of St Mary Magdalene, was granted to the prior on 30 June 1356, and larger fairs at both St Mary Magdalene and St Luke were granted on 12 August 1357. There is no obvious sign that this was in response to this petition, but grants of pontage for five-year periods were also made to the prior on two occasions around this time (the first being in October 1353).
